How parishioners are divided by Orthodox churches in Ukraine. infographics

The Ukrainian Parliament has called for sanctions against Patriarch Kirill, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has declared independence from the Russian Orthodox Church. What are the Orthodox Churches of Ukraine in RBC infographic

Since the beginning of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, one of the topics discussed has been the situation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), which still remains the largest in the country in terms of the number of places of worship and parishes. The position of the church began to weaken after the annexation of Crimea, in 2018 in Ukraine the process of forming the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU; it included the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church) began, and in early 2019 the new church received a tomos from the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew, which gave rise to a split between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Then the process of transition of the parishes of the UOC-MP and their entry into the new church began.

From the beginning of the special operation, according to the BBC, this process continued— Up to 400 parishes could already go to the OCU, and Ukrainian legislators began to discuss sanctions against the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church. The UOC and the ROC also differed in their assessments of the events taking place. The Kyiv Church condemned the position of the Russian Orthodox Church and Patriarch Kirill, calling the hostilities “the sin of Cain”.

On May 31, Parliament supported an appeal to the National Security Council with a proposal to impose sanctions against Patriarch Kirill and other high-ranking representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church. The list of restrictive measures they propose consists of 19 items, including blocking assets, restricting trade operations, banning “the use of the radio frequency resource of Ukraine”, limiting the issuance of cash on payment cards, stopping cultural exchanges and scientific cooperation, denial of visas, cancellation of official visits, deprivation of state awards.

How exactly these sanctions will affect the position of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is still unknown. In 2019, when during the Ukrainian public discussion the possibility of seizing the property of the church, including the famous lavra & mdash; Kiev-Pechersk and Pochaev, RBC found out that most of these objects are state-owned by Ukraine, and the churches are transferred under contracts for use.

Former US Ambassador to Russia Calls for ‘Fix’ Aspect of Sanctions

According to McFaul, Western countries should support Russian activists, human rights activists and journalists who have left the country. The former ambassador suggested not restricting their access to accounts and visas

Michael McFaul

Western countries should set up a special commission to help Russian opposition leaders, human rights activists and independent journalists who have fled the country and clashed abroad struggling with sanctions, wrote former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul in a Washington Post op-ed.

“One aspect of the sanctions regime needs to be urgently corrected: it is the wrongful punishment of Russian opposition leaders, human rights activists and independent journalists who have fled their homeland,” — he said.

As McFaul explained, because of the sanctions, these people were left without access to their credit cards, bank accounts cannot obtain a visa, residence permit or other documents. To solve this problem, the former ambassador proposed to the authorities of the countries that imposed sanctions that they create a special committee of independent experts who “could make recommendations about Russian activists who need bank accounts, credit cards, travel documents, visas and work permits.”

“The seal of this committee could help banks, homeowners and governments make decisions about these Russians,”— says McFaul.

In addition, he suggested that the United States, the European Union, Great Britain, Canada and other countries create special programs to “encourage the emigration of the best Russians”, and to provide those specialists who are already abroad with the opportunity to accelerate the acquisition of citizenship in case of refusal from Russian.

At the beginning of the week, the German government proposed to simplify the entry of Russians who are in a vulnerable position at home due to criticism of the Russian government. First of all, we are talking about human rights activists, opposition representatives and journalists who oppose the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

Rosgvardeets killed in battle with foreign mercenaries in Ukraine

According to the National Guard, the fighter died in a battle with a group that included the son of British MP Ben Grant. In one of the videos, a foreigner shouts “shoot” before launching a missile at a Russian armored personnel carrier

Rosguard fighter died in Donbass during a clash with foreign mercenaries, among whom was the son of British MP Ben Grant, according to the agency's website .

We are talking about the commander of the detachment of a separate operational brigade of the North Caucasian District of the Russian National Guard Troops, Sergeant Adam Bisultanov. The military “died saving his comrades”, the National Guard reported.

At the request of Roskomnadzor, RBC provides data on the details of the military operation in Ukraine based on information from Russian official sources.

According to the federal service, on May 26, the National Guard discovered an “enemy group”, with which a battle ensued. Bisultanov performed the tasks of covering the personnel. During the collision, his armored personnel carrier received three hits from a grenade launcher and was hit, but, “despite multiple injuries,” the fighter continued to cover his comrades with fire. “During the next hit in an armored personnel carrier, a serviceman received injuries incompatible with life,” — the message says.

Later it turned out that the Russian Guards were fighting with “a group of mercenaries from the UK and the USA,” according to the Russian Guard. In this group of mercenaries was the son of British MP Ben Grant, the department said. It cited an article from The Daily Telegraph and a video of the attack filmed on a GoPro camera by one of the fighters. In this video, one of the mercenaries comes out of the forest and aims a shoulder-mounted Matador anti-tank missile at an APC. In the footage, a man resembling Grant can be heard shouting “shoot” and “careful recoil” before the rocket launch, writes The Daily Telegraph.

“This is another video confirmation of the fact that mercenaries of foreign private military companies are fighting against Russian military personnel on Ukrainian territory. On the video, you can clearly hear how the attackers are talking to each other in English, — noted in the Russian Guard. It added that these video materials were transferred to the military investigation department for the Western Military District.

By the beginning of May, the Investigative Committee of Russia opened criminal cases against 75 mercenaries participating in the battles on the side of Ukraine. According to investigators, they came from the US, UK, Canada, Norway, Georgia and other countries. The cases were initiated on the basis of the testimony of Ukrainian prisoners of war who are in Russia.

The eldest son of the British parliamentarian Helen Grant— 30-year-old Ben Grant— SK suspected that he led the attack of a group of Western mercenaries on Russian military equipment. Ben Grant has served in the Royal Marines for more than five years, according to The Guardian. Merkel for the first time publicly condemned the special operation of Russia and supported Ukraine

The former German chancellor also supports all the measures taken by Germany and other EU countries, as well as the US, NATO, G7 and the UN to end the Russian military operation *

Angela Merkel

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in her first public speech in six months, condemned Russia's special operation and supported Ukraine's right to self-defense, Zeit Online reports.

“I stand in solidarity with Ukraine, attacked by Russia, and support its right to self-defense,” — she declared. Merkel added that she supports all measures taken by Germany and other EU countries, as well as the US, NATO, G7 and the UN to stop the Russian military operation.

According to her, Russia's actions marked a “blatant undermining” international law in the history of Europe after the end of World War II.

Merkel called “a small but beautiful spot in this endless sadness” support for Kyiv by many neighboring countries, including Poland and Moldova.

The day after the start of the special operation, February 25, Merkel told the DPA news agency that Russia's actions in Ukraine mark a turning point moment in European history since the end of the Cold War.

“There is no justification for this flagrant violation of international law. I condemn this in the most serious way,” — emphasized. The ex-chancellor also added that she was following developments in Ukraine “with the greatest concern and sympathy.”

Prime Minister Polish Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in April accused Merkel of being silent, despite the fact that Berlin, under her leadership, contributed to the strengthening of Russia.

In early April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky invited Merkel and ex-President of France Nicolas Sarkozy in Bucha in the Kyiv region. According to him, he wants them to see “what the policy of concessions to Russia has led to in 14 years.”

Russia is conducting a special military operation in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it the goal of protecting the population of Donbass, as well as demilitarization and “denazification”; neighboring country.

Pele turned to Putin because of the special operation in Ukraine

The legendary Brazilian footballer Pele turned to Vladimir Putin because of Ukraine. He recalled the meeting with the President of Russia in 2017 and asked him to stop this conflict .jpg” alt=”Pele turned to Putin because of the special operation in Ukraine” />

Brazilian soccer player Pelé has sent an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin urging him to “stop the invasion” to Ukraine. He posted a letter to Putin on Instagram (the owner of the social network— the company Meta— is recognized as extremist in Russia and banned, the social network is blocked).

Pele published his post before the match between the national teams of Ukraine and Scotland, which compete in the semi-finals of the playoffs of the championship of the world in 2022.

“In a few minutes, Ukraine will play its first official match since the beginning of the conflict. I personally wrote this letter, and I hope that the violence will stop and we can build a better world together,— says Pele's address. There is no justification for violence, he says.

“This conflict, like all others, is immoral, unjustified and brings nothing but pain, fear, horror and torment. There is no reason for it to continue <…> When we met and exchanged a big smile followed by a long handshake, it was impossible to imagine that one day we could be as divided as we are today,— written by Pele.

“The power to stop this conflict is in your hands. The very ones that I shook in Moscow, at our last meeting in 2017, — counts the footballer.

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that its goals are to protect the inhabitants of Donbass from the “genocide by the Kyiv regime”, as well as the “denazification” of and “demilitarization” Ukraine.

Also, the President of Russia stressed that Moscow's plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories. At the same time, according to him, all peoples have the right to self-determination, while the inhabitants of Donbass “have never been asked how they want to arrange their lives.” According to him, it is important that the right to choose “could be used by all the peoples living on the territory of today's Ukraine”, “everyone who wants it.”

Kyiv, in response, severed diplomatic relations with Russia, announced the mobilization and introduced martial law.

The Ministry of Defense announced the criminal liability for mercenaries in Ukraine

Foreigners fighting on the side of Kyiv and detained by the Russian military will face “at least” criminal liability, the Defense Ministry warned. Foreign mercenaries who participate in hostilities in Ukraine on the side of Kyiv will face at least criminal liability, the Ministry of Defense said in Telegram.

< p>At the request of Roskomnadzor, RBC provides data on the details of the military operation in Ukraine based on information from Russian official sources.

“In accordance with international humanitarian law, mercenaries are not combatants, and the best that awaits them is criminal liability.” ,— says the department's publication.

Attempts to guarantee them legal protection in accordance with international conventions, such as their inclusion in the list of military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or the National Guard or the issuance of “fresh passports” to them; citizens of Ukraine, “none of them will be saved,” the Ministry of Defense said.

Combatants (from French combattants— “belligerents”) are people who are directly involved in hostilities as part of the armed forces of one of the parties to the conflict, and as such have a special legal status.

Once in the hands of the enemy, combatants have the right to be treated as prisoners of war, and they are also exempt from criminal liability, since under international law, the military is only liable for crimes not caused by military necessity.

This statement applies not only to military personnel, but also to the militia and volunteer units that openly carry weapons and have decals.

About how the law works in relation to prisoners of war, RBC wrote in the article “How trials of prisoners of war from Azovstal can be organized.

The Ministry of Defense also claims that since the beginning of May “virtually dried up” the influx of foreign mercenaries into Ukraine participating in hostilities against the Russian armed forces. “According to the data at our disposal, today the total number of foreign mercenaries in Ukraine has almost halved, from 6.6 to 3.5 thousand people. At the same time, the number of mercenaries in the combat units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard in the Donbass has decreased by orders of magnitude,— the department reported.

US Representative to NATO Denies Plans to Send F-16s to Ukraine

The United States will not supply its aircraft to Ukraine, as Kyiv requested, the country's official representative to NATO said. The United States does not intend to provide Ukraine with its high-class aircraft, despite the advance of the Russian Armed Forces in eastern Ukraine, the permanent US Representative to NATO Julianne Smith in a comment to Air Force Magazine.

Smith was asked if the United States or members of the NATO alliance are planning to transfer the latest generation of combat aircraft, such as the F-16, to Kyiv. “No”, — she replied.

The Permanent Representative also noted that the Pentagon is in regular discussions with Ukraine's Ministry of Defense about its needs on the battlefield. But the prospect of a protracted conflict between Russia and Ukraine has not changed the willingness of partners to provide aircraft to Ukraine.

The day before, US President Joe Biden announced another tranche of military assistance to Ukraine, including the supply of HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) with a range up to 500 km, although two days earlier he said that the United States would not supply Ukraine with systems whose missiles could reach Russian territory.

Before Biden announced the decision to provide new weapons to Ukraine, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken held talks with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, where he said that a trusting relationship had developed between Washington and Kyiv and Ukraine assured the US that it would not use MLRS to strike in Russia.

Later, the Pentagon clarified that the new $700 million military assistance package to Ukraine, in addition to MLRS and ammunition, will include five anti-artillery radars, two radar stations for other purposes, 1,000 Javelin man-portable anti-tank systems and 50 missile launchers, 6,000 units anti-tank weapons, 15 thousand 155mm artillery shells, four Mi-17 helicopters, 15 tactical vehicles, as well as spare parts and equipment.

Lithuania proposes EU to create mechanism for transferring Russia’s assets to Ukraine

The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Finance called on the European Commission to seek legal grounds or create new mechanisms for the confiscation of frozen Russian assets in favor of Ukraine *

Gintare Skaiste

There is no legal mechanism in the European Union for the recovery of Russia's frozen assets in favor of Ukraine for the further restoration of the country. This was stated by the Minister of Finance of Lithuania Gintare Skaiste on the radio station iniu Radijas.

“[Russian] assets are located in countries that impose sanctions, which means that the money can be used, because, to put it mildly, they are not on territory of Russia. War reparations could be taken from Russia for the damage caused to Ukraine, but this is not yet a legally regulated process, — stressed the head of the Ministry of Finance of Lithuania (quote from diena.lt).

According to Skaiste, the European Commission should look for legal grounds for this and, if there are none, create new mechanisms so that Russian funds can be used.

The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Finance stressed that Russian assets could significantly contribute to the restoration of Ukraine.< /p>

Since the end of February, the West, in particular the United States, Great Britain and the European Union, have repeatedly tightened sanctions against Russia. Due to restrictive measures, almost half of its gold and foreign exchange reserves were frozen— about $300 billion.

According to the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the EU is looking for opportunities to use these assets to restore Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, said that violation of international norms and “theft of other people's assets” will only lead to problems for those who do it.

“Theft of other people's assets has never brought good to anyone, especially those who are engaged in this unseemly business”,— stressed the head of state.

The Kremlin warned that they would consider the seizure of Russian assets “in fact, outright theft.” The Federation Council stressed that such a decision could cause retaliatory measures from Russia, as well as alienate other countries and investors from the United States.

Ukraine demanded from Russia security guarantees for vessels with grain

Russia must withdraw its naval forces to export grain from Ukraine, Nikolenko said. The Kremlin emphasized that Moscow does not prevent the passage of ships, and the ships cannot leave the ports, because they were mined by Ukrainian forces

Ukraine demands from Russia security guarantees for ships and ports involved in the export of grain, said Oleg Nikolenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry. He wrote about this on Facebook (the owner of the social network, the Meta company, was recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the Russian Navy would ensure the passage of ships with grain if Ukraine clears coastal waters.

“As a first step, Russia should withdraw its forces in the sea area around Ukraine and provide security guarantees not to attack ports and commercial convoys,”— written by Nikolenko.

As of early May, 4.5 million tons of grain had accumulated in Ukrainian ports, the UN reported. The organization called on Russia to unblock harbors and ensure the free passage of ships. The Kremlin, in turn, said that Russia is not obstructing the export of grain. According to the press secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov, ships cannot leave the ports through no fault of Russia, but because the Ukrainian military has mined their ports. The Russian Foreign Ministry also called the lifting of sanctions a condition for opening harbors.

Turkey offered its assistance in resolving the issue of grain supplies from Ukraine. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, she is ready to help clear Ukrainian ports of mines. In addition, Ankara advocated the creation of an international quadripartite contact group with the participation of the UN, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine.

Prosecutors seize documents at the office of the Moldovan opposition party

Prosecutors seize documents in the office of the Party of Socialists of Moldova, which was headed by Dodon Now he is under house arrest on a number of charges, including treason jpg” alt=”Prosecutors seize documents from the office of the Moldovan opposition party” />

Employees of the prosecutor's office of Moldova seize documents in the office of the opposition Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), NewsMaker reports with reference to the press secretary of the country's Prosecutor General's Office, Mariana Kerpec.

“Anti-corruption prosecutor's office employees are now confiscating documents at the headquarters PSRM. This operation is part of an investigation into the illegal financing of a political party, — said Kerpek.

According to the spokeswoman, this is not a full-fledged search in the office of the PSRM, the prosecutors intend to seize only the documents that are necessary to investigate the case of illegal financing of the party.

< /p>

Former Moldovan President Igor Dodon led the PSRM until the end of December. Now he is under investigation due to four counts of treason, illegal enrichment, passive corruption and illegal party financing.

The basis for the investigation against Dodon was the video from the meeting of the ex-president with the former head of the Democratic Party of Moldova, entrepreneur Vladimir Plahotniuc, which was published back in 2020 by ex-deputy Iurie Renita. In a video recorded in 2019, Plahotniuc and his deputy Sergei Yaralov are handing over to Dodon a package, according to Renita, with money. At the same time, Dodon and Plahotniuc are also discussing the formation of a coalition in parliament.

The criminal case against the former president was opened on May 18. On May 23, Dodon was detained for 72 hours, and then put under house arrest for 30 days. The prosecutor's office said it would appeal against the house arrest decision.

Dodon considers the case against him political and fabricated by order of the current president of Moldova, Maia Sandu. The ex-president named three goals of the investigation: “to divert the attention of the population from social problems”, to exert psychological pressure on them, as well as an attempt to liquidate the PSRM, which appears in the case.

Sandu, commenting on the investigation, expressed hope that that the prosecutor's office “does not engage in political games either on someone else's or on their own initiative.” She also focused on the leaks of information about the case, which are “alarming”, and turned to the department for clarification.

In the Kremlin, commenting on the Dodon case, they expressed their concern and pointed to the use of the practice of persecution “against those who are supporters of the development of friendly mutually beneficial relations” with Russia.

The authorities explained the explosions in the port of Berdyansk by demining

Explosions in the port are connected with mine clearance, the administration of Berdyansk said. They claim that the explosive devices left the armed forces of Ukraine

Video

Explosions in the port of Berdyansk are connected with mine clearance, the city administration said, RIA Novosti reports. .

“Residents of Berdyansk and guests of the city, keep calm: the explosion that occurred today in the port of the city at 13:00 was the result of demining the port area from explosive devices left by the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” — the administration said.

The UNIAN agency, citing eyewitnesses, reported two explosions in the port: the first occurred at about 13:20 (the time coincides with Moscow time), the second— in 10–15 minutes.

RBC sent a request to the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense and to the mayor's office of Berdyansk.

Berdyansk is located in the Zaporozhye region of Ukraine. Since the end of February, it has been under the control of the Russian military. A new administration was formed there, Alexander Saulenko was appointed acting mayor.

At the end of April, the Ukrainian authorities decided to close the ports in Berdyansk, Mariupol, Kherson and Skadovsk, which are located on the territory not controlled by Kyiv. They explained the decision by “the impossibility of servicing ships and passengers, carrying out cargo, transport and other related economic activities.” Ports will be closed “until control is restored” over them, the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure reported.

On May 29, Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the pro-Russian military-civilian administration of the Zaporozhye region, said that the port of Berdyansk was “in good condition, despite numerous shellings.” According to him, it is planned to resume the work of the port in the near future, a full restart— “a question of several weeks.”

Western countries insist that the Russian military is blockading Ukrainian ports and, as a result, ships with a cargo of grain cannot leave from there. In response, the Russian authorities claimed that the ports and the water area near them were mined and merchant ships could be blown up. At the end of May, the Ministry of Defense announced the opening of corridors for the exit of foreign ships from the ports on the Black and Azov Seas.

The head of Interpol warned that criminals could get weapons from Ukraine

Due to the conflict in Ukraine, a large number of weapons sent to this country, after the end of hostilities, may end up in the hands of criminals, Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock warned, reports AFP.

“The high availability of weapons during the current conflict will lead to their illicit distribution in the post-conflict phase,”— said the secretary general of Interpol. “It will happen, I have no doubt. As we speak, the criminals have already focused their attention on this, — he added.

He noted that the criminals “operate on a global level”, so deals with weapons stolen in Ukraine will be made on different continents.

Stock believes that even heavy weapons will appear on the black market. He recalled that there are databases for the exchange of information on weapons: “We call on countries— EU members use these databases because no region or country can do it alone.

Also, the conflict in Ukraine has led to an increase in gasoline theft, to “large-scale” theft of fertilizers; and counterfeiting of chemicals as the cost of these goods has risen.

Earlier, Europol warned about the risk of obtaining weapons by criminals. “We want to prevent a repeat of the situation, like 30 years ago during the war in Yugoslavia. Weapons from that war are still used by criminal gangs,— said Catherine de Bolle, Director of the EU Police Service. She indicated that Europol plans to set up an international working group to develop a strategy to prevent such a development. The head of the service noted that Europol monitors the movement of known terrorists and extremists between the EU countries and Ukraine.
